High pressure but low temperatures.

Our area is now covered with a series of high air pressure systems. These systems will bring two key attributes to our area over the next few days.

Firstly, for today at least, the system is made up of a number closely spaced air pressure “bands”. This will bring cold winds from the E -ENE. The average wind speed today will be around 8mph with gusts of around 25mph. A wind speed of 8mph will add a wind chill effect of around -2.5c.

The second feature will be that the clouds will lighten a little although we do still have a slight risk of an isolated light snow flurry today. if we do see any snow it will not add any accumulation. The lighter cloud means that the sky will be a little brighter but it will also be cold. Our top temperature today will be around 1c (with the wind chill it will feel more like -2c). Overnight the thermometer will reach a minimum temperature of around -3c.

The GFS ensemble chart (follow the red line when viewing) shows that the temperature is not really going to begin increasing until the 29-30th of this month. It is going to be a chilly week so dig out your hat and gloves!
